To prevent the possibility of incoming cold liquid mixing with outgoing hot liquid, the gas hot water heater should have a dip tube which is a long narrow tube that directs incoming cold liquid into the bottom of the tank. Without the dip tube or because of a broken dip tube, one would be unable to get more than lukewarm water at best, and it may always seem like the hot water is running out on one too quickly.

The thermostat is a vital component of the gas hot water heater, and it keeps the water at the desired heated level when the heater is switched on, and there will often be a knob that allows users to control the temperature between warm, medium and hot. The gas hot water heater should also have a drain valve to permit draining of the tank for reasons such as periodic removal of sediment or for replacement.
